INDOOR ARCHERY WORLD SERIES RULES 2023

1. Introduction

The Indoor Archery World Series 2023 will feature one event per month and will feature a brand-new Youth final.

2. Format

  • World Archery rules for all events.
  • The use of a triangular tri-spot 40cm target face is mandatory for televised finals.

3. Calendar

250 Series – Strassen, Luxemburg     18-20 November 2022
250 Series – Taipei, Chinese Taipei    10-11 December 2022
500 Series – Nimes, France                  21-23 January 2023
1000 Series – Las Vegas, USA              4-6 February 2023

4. Participation

Any athlete who is a member in good standing of a World Archery member association (national archery federation) may participate. Proof of license or membership may be asked.

4.1 As an organiser

If you wish that your event counts toward the open ranking of the Indoor World Series, you need to contact you national Member Association to register your event on World Archery calendar, by doing so, you accept that your event shall be ran respecting World Archery rules for 18m rounds. The organiser should have a clear indication if all participants are automatically included and/or if any additional entry fee applies.

Once your event is registered on the World Archery calendar, please register the event for Indoor World Series here. Events shall be held between 01 November 2022 and 20 January 2023.

Within 48 hours after the completion of the event, please submit the results of your event in one of the approved formats (csv, xls, xslx, ods), templates can be found on World Archery’s Extranet. If the event is running with the Ianseo results system, the export file of the event will also be accepted.

4.1.1Fess

To have your event registered the following fee will apply:

  • World Archery calendar fee (to be invoiced to Member Association at the end of calendar year): 25 CHF
  • Event registration to the IWS calendar: 100 CHF fee (flat) + 2 CHF per result submitted to be invoiced to the event organizer. The invoice will be sent through Paypal, the organiser shall make sure that the provided email address is suitable for Paypal payments.

4.2 As an athlete

For your score to be valid for the Indoor World Series open ranking, you need to register and physically attend a registered event, listed here.

  1. If sanitary restrictions are required for the event, such as quarantine upon arrival, or a requirement to stage the event with a sanitary bubble, the event will be canceled.
  2. World Archery reserves the right to refuse partially or entirely results not submitted in the required format, or events for which the invoice has not been paid in full before the Tuesday 18:00 UTC that immediately follows the event.

    There is no fee to be paid to World Archery directly, however the organiser may require a fee to enter the event.

5. Rankings

There are three ranking lists, elite ranking, youth ranking, and open ranking.

  1. An open ranking based on 60-arrow qualification scores, using each athlete’s best three
    results across the season. Everyone who competes receives an open ranking. The top 8 ranked athletes at the open ranking will score bonus points toward the elite ranking. For U21 categories, the final open ranking results will be as of 10 January 2023.For participants who shoot in Las Vegas, only their first 60 scoring arrows will count. For compound, the inner X of the ring will count as 10 points, therefore, scores shot under the Las Vegas format will be adjusted to the regular World Archery scoring system.
  2. An elite ranking based on accruing points according to final placing after eliminations,
    using each athlete’s best two results across the season, one of them must be an IWS 1000 event, and the points allocated based on the open ranking will be added as a bonus. The 16 highest-ranked archers in each division are invited to the Indoor Archery World Series Final, held after the last stage.The elite ranking points for Las Vegas will be based on the positions achieved after the first 60 arrows shot in the championships division only as there is no elimination phase in the Vegas Shoot.
  3. A youth ranking based on accruing points according to final placing after eliminations,
    using each athlete’s best two results across the season in a U21 event. The 16 highest-ranked archers in each youth division are invited to the Indoor Archery World Series Youth Finals, held during the Nîmes Archery Tournament.The youth ranking points for Nîmes will be based on the positions achieved after the first 60 arrows shot in the qualification round only.

5.1. Open Ranking (individual)

World Archery will produce an overall open ranking list, ranking all participants, that attended any stage, or registered event by their highest three (3) qualification scores (first 60 arrows) achieved in the season for all categories listed below:

  • Barebow women
  • Barebow men
  • Compound women
  • Compound men
  • Recurve women
  • Recurve men

A separate open ranking will also be published for the following categories:

  • U21 Compound Women
  • U21 Compound Men
  • U21 Recurve Women
  • U21 Recurve Men

A maximum of one score per division can be registered per event of the Indoor World Series or per registered event.

5.2. Elite Ranking (individual)

World Archery will produce an elite Indoor World Series ranking list from the points accumulated from the positional points based on the final ranking achieved at each stage to identify who qualifies for the Indoor World Series Final in Las Vegas.

The following table illustrates the distribution of elite ranking points. Elite ranking points will be available to the following categories: recurve men, recurve women, compound men and compound women.

World Series open ranking points will be awarded after the publication of the final open ranking (cumulating the best 3 scores as of 24 January 2023).

Ties in the Indoor World Series Rankings to qualify for the Indoor World Series Final will be solved on the following basis:

Between rank No 1 and 15:

  1. A coin toss (performed by computer)
  2. For rank n° 16 (the cut):
  • Rank ranking after the 60 first arrows shot during the Nîmes event
  • Best score at a IWS 1000 event
  • Best score at a IWS 500 event
  • Best score at a IWS 250 event

If the tie remains, a shoot-off will be conducted at a time to be determined in the Nimes’ event schedule. The shoot-off will be conducted on a 40cm triangular tri-spot target face with each athlete shooting one (1) arrow. Closest to the center of the target wins as per the World Archery shoot-off rules for indoor competitions.

5.3. Youth Ranking (individual)

World Archery will produce a Youth Indoor World Series ranking list from the points accumulated from the positional points based on the final ranking achieved at each stage to identify who qualifies for the Youth Indoor World Series Final in Nîmes. Only events listed in section 3, and organized before the event of Nîmes, of the present rule shall award elite points.

The following table illustrates the distribution of youth ranking points. Youth ranking points will be available to the following categories: U21 recurve men, U21 recurve women, U21 compound men and U21 compound women.

World Series open ranking points will be awarded after the publication of the final open ranking (cumulating the 3 best scores, as of 10 January 2023).

Ties in the Youth Indoor World Series Rankings to qualify of the Youth Indoor World Series Final will be solved on the following basis:

Between rank No 1 and 15:

  1. A coin toss (performed by computer)
  2. For rank n° 16 (the cut):
  • Rank ranking after the 60 first arrows shot during the Nîmes event
  • Best score at a IWS 1000 event
  • Best score at a IWS 500 event
  • Best score at a IWS 250 event

6. Indoor World Series Final

  1. The World Indoor Series Final will be held in Las Vegas (USA) on Saturday 5 February 2023.
  2. Those athletes who have qualified will be known after the second round of The Vegas Shoot in Las Vegas. All athletes wishing to participate in the finals in Las Vegas, MUST register in the “Championship Compound” open/female” for Compound disciplines and in the “Championships Recurve” as a male/female” for the Recurve discipline.
  3. All recurve individual matches will use the sets system, consisting of the best of five (5) sets shooting three (3) arrows. Alternate shooting – twenty (20) seconds per arrow will be used to shoot one (1) arrow in the gold finals on a, triangular, tri-spot 40cm World Archery target face.
  4. The Compound division will use cumulative scoring, five (5) ends of three (3) arrows. Alternate shooting – twenty (20) seconds per arrow – will be used to shoot one (1) arrow in the gold finals on a triangular tri-spot 40cm World Archery target face. Both women and men will score by counting the X ring as 10 points and the recurve 10-ring as 9 points.
  5. Following the World Archery Rules, arrow diameter will be limited to 9.3mm (not including arrow wraps); point diameter may be a maximum of 9.4mm.
  6. Athletes in each category will be ranked from 1 to 16 following their position in the World Indoor Series ranking 2022/2023 season. Athletes will be paired against each other, following the head-to-head elimination match play bracket (1st against the 16th, 2nd against the 15th…etc). Therefore, the competition will start in 1/8 finals, followed by the quarterfinals, semi-finals and bronze and gold medal matches. The losing semi-finalists will meet in a bronze medal match.
    The winner of the gold medal matches will also be awarded the title of Indoor World Series Champion
  7. The exact competition schedule and details of the World Indoor Series Final will be communicated on www.worldarchery.sport

7. Youth Indoor World Series Final

  1. The Youth Indoor World Series Final will be held in Nîmes (FRA) on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 January 2023.
  2. Those athletes who have qualified will be known after the end of the qualification rounds in Nîmes. All athletes wishing to participate in the finals in Nîmes must register as U21.
  3. All recurve individual matches will use the sets system, consisting of the best of five (5) sets shooting three (3) arrows. Alternate shooting – twenty (20) seconds per arrow will be used to shoot one (1) arrow in the gold finals on a triangular tri-spot 40cm World Archery target face.
  4. The Compound division will use cumulative scoring, five (5) ends of three (3) arrows. Alternate shooting – twenty (20) seconds per arrow – will be used to shoot one (1) arrow in the gold finals on a triangular tri-spot 40cm World Archery target face.

8. Prizes

8.1 The top three participants in each category (recurve men, recurve women, compound men, and compound women) at the Indoor World Series Final in Las Vegas, Saturday 05 February 2023 will receive the following prize money:

1st place:              5,000 CHF
2nd place:             2,000 CHF
3rd place:              1,000 CHF

8.2 The top three participants in each youth category (U21 recurve men, U21 recurve women, U21 compound men and U21 compound women) at the Youth Indoor World Series Youth in Nîmes, will receive the following scholarship:

1st place:                700 CHF
2nd place:              300 CHF
3rd place:                250 CHF

The scholarship will be awarded to the athletes by show of proof of archery-related expenses (participation and other costs related to participation at competition, equipment purchase, coaching fees) and shall be claimed within 10 months after the date of the Indoor World Series youth final.

9. Dress regulations and camouflage

Compliant to World Archery rules and for athletes and coaches:

  • No hunting-type camouflage is permitted on the field of play. This includes bows, arrows, quivers, clothing, hats, and shoes.
  • No jeans, blue denim, or opened-toe shoes are allowed on the competition field of play.

10. Related Information about Las Vegas competitions

In 2023, there will be two indoor archery events in Las Vegas:
  • The Las Vegas World Archery Festival, meaning the annual, traditional Las Vegas archery
    tournament and trade show from 03-06 February 2023. The first two days of the event will count as the Indoor World Series.
  • The Indoor World Series Final is on Saturday night 05 February 2023.

11. Legal Framework

The 2023 Indoor World Series and the Archery Indoor World Series Rules follow all provisions set out in the World Archery Constitution and Rules unless explicitly detailed. In case of any misunderstanding due to translation of these rules, the English version will be referred to.

World Archery and the organizers reserve the rights to change these rules at any time.
